EncFS: An Encrypted Filesystem In User Space

EncFS: An Encrypted Filesystem In User Space

EncFS: an Encrypted Filesystem for FUSE

EncFS provides an encrypted filesystem in user-space. It runs in userspace, using the FUSE library for the filesystem interface. EncFS is open source software, licensed under the LGPL.

EncFS is now over 10 years old (first release in 2003). It was written because older NFS and kernel-based encrypted filesystems such as CFS had not kept pace with Linux development.

EncFS encrypts individual files, by translating all requests for the virtual EncFS filesystem into the equivalent encrypted operations on the raw filesystem.

Status

Over the last 10 years, a number of good alternatives have grown up. Computing power has increased to the point where it is reasonable to encrypt the entire filesystem of personal computers (and even mobile phones!). On Linux, ecryptfs provides a nice dynamically mountable encrypted home directory.

EncFS has been dormant for a while. It is cleaning up in order to try and provide a better base for a version 2, but whether EncFS flowers again depends upon community interest. In order to make it easier for anyone to contribute, it is moving a new home on Github.

Unique Features

EncFS has a few features still not found anywhere else (as of Dec 2014) that may be interesting to you.

Reverse mode

encfs --reverse provides an encrypted view of an unencrypted folder. This enables encrypted remote backups using standard tools like rsync.

Fast on classical HDDs

EncFS is typically much faster than ecryptfs for stat()-heavy workloads when the backing device is a classical hard disk. This is because ecryptfs has to to read each file header to determine the file size - EncFS does not. This is one additional seek for each stat. See PERFORMANCE.md for detailed benchmarks on HDD, SSD and ramdisk.

Google Voice App to Get VoIP Integration Across Platforms Soon

Google Voice App to Get VoIP Integration Across Platforms Soon

Google Voice App to Get VoIP Integration Across Platforms Soon

Google renovated its call forwarding and voicemail app Google Voice just a few days ago and introduced a 'cleaner, more intuitive' interface. The tech giant has also assured regular updates to Google Voice, and now it's planning to present VoIP calling in one of its upcoming updates.

Google has established to 9to5Google that it is working on VoIP integration in the Google Voice app. "The updated Google Voice app doesn't have VoIP features - it has the same features for making calls as the existing Google Voice app. Hangouts will ring by default in addition to any forwarding phones on your account, just as it did before. (Again, not a change with the new app.) We are working on VoIP integration," Google told the publication.

The best part of the new update is the design overhaul that has been brought forward to all the versions; the web, iOS, and Android. And that is the ability to use Google Voice outside of the US. Google Voice apps are in advanced features and a cleaner design that matches the look of Google's other apps, as per the company. The lack of updates meant that the new features and integrations people were using and were excited about were not presented on Google Voice. The promise of "regular updates" is more significant, and Google has confirmed to us that one of those upcoming features is VoIP integration.

We do not know that much about the Google Voice VOIP integration yet since Google just declared this feature is coming to Google Voice. Meaning that when somebody calls our Google Voice number, Hangouts will still ring on different devices. Google Voice will be able to run across all devices, including Android and iOS. If we now use Hangouts for our Google Voice communication, there's no need to change to the new apps, but we might want to try them out as we continue to bring new enhancements. Those in other countries want to throw their number in Google Voice but are unable to because it only supports U.S. numbers right now. Google is trying to move Hangouts away from the general consumer market and position it as an enterprise solution.

The new VOIP feature is not now on the new Google Voice update from previous in the week, but you can expect this new integration to be out in the next update. In addition, Google Hangouts is expected to receive "heavy encryption" features, making it more appealing to business users.

Apparently, Wi-Fi calling abilities are being worked on; in the event that cellular connectivity goes ruined. The report further states that "this ability to make a call through your number regardless of device - and even on the Web - could single-handedly make Voice a full-featured cellular alternative, if not a full replacement'.

With VoIP integration, Google Voice could really pick up pace, and possibly then, Google could look to develop in international markets.

Facebook Launches NFC-Based Two Factor Authentication Process for Added Security

Facebook Launches NFC-Based Two Factor Authentication Process for Added Security

Facebook Launches NFC-Based Two Factor Authentication Process for Added Security

Facebook has announced a new feature called ‘Security Key’ for two-factor authentication while logging on to the social media website, that does not need an SMS to be sent. The social media company has declared that it will now support FIDO U2F security key, which is a physical key that is plugged in a USB-port on a computer and tapped to confirm login along with the password.

Security keys work as part of Facebook’s two-factor authentication system, which adds a second layer of defense in case a user’s password is conceded. Usually, that second factor is a string of numbers sent over text or an onboard app, but the security key makes it a physical device, a smart USB drive implanted into the computer whenever we log in. To make it work, we’ll have to buy a device and carry it with us at all times, usually on a keyring, but the end result is easier and faster than waiting for a code over SMS. A number of services already support security keys under the FIDO specification, including Dropbox, Google, and GitHub.

The social networking giant presently offers 2FA via a security code for login approvals from a text message (SMS) or by using the Facebook app to produce the code directly on their phone. Now, Facebook has announced a new security key system that can transmit data via NFC to help log into the social media site through a physical key. This means that NFC-embedded Android devices can now use NFC-capable keys to log into Facebook's mobile site.

Apart from NFC logins, Facebook presented the traditional security key system as an added option for 2FA. This means that we can register a physical security key to our account so that the next time we log in after enabling login approvals, we'll simply tap a small hardware device that goes into the USB drive of our computer. This again has support only for the Web browser. Furthermore, we'll need to be using the latest version of Chrome or Opera to add the Security Key from your computer.
With all these shortcomings, it is unlikely for this feature to be implemented widely, but it's still a testimony of the things to come in the future. With the advent of a hardware part being essential for logging in to Facebook, the potential of an exploit becomes negligible.

Facebook is the first major platform to support the NFC system, although obtainability is still spotty. It’s only accessible on Android, and users will have to log in through the mobile site rather than the app itself. The setup also needs the most recent version of the Google Authenticator app. “Right now the APIs to do this are still pretty new,” Hill explains. “There aren’t native APIs yet in Android for an app to take advantage of.”

The resulting system is unlikely to be widely used, but it’s a glimpse of what two-factor protections could look like on a mobile device, a future that Hill and others at Facebook seem eager to reach. “We’re looking forward to other methods like Bluetooth,” says Hill.

Using security keys for two-factor authentication has a number of benefits:

1. Our login becomes protected to phishing because we physically don’t enter a code our self, instead of the hardware providing cryptographic proof.
2. Security keys supporting U2F will not just work for Facebook accounts, but can also care online accounts of GitHub, Dropbox, Google, Salesforce, and others.
3. Logging in becomes fast and simple on our desktop, thanks to just a tap on the key after you enter our password.

“Security keys for Facebook logins currently only work with certain web browsers and mobile devices, so we’ll ask you to also register an additional login approval method, such as your mobile phone or Code Generator. To add a security key from your computer, you’ll need to be using the latest version of Chrome or Opera. At this time we don’t support security key logins for our mobile Facebook app, but if you have an NFC-capable Android device with the latest version of Chrome and Google Authenticator installed, you can use an NFC-capable key to log in from our mobile website,” the Facebook team said on the blog.

WhatsApp for Android Coming With New Update Let You Recall, Edit Messages After Sending Them

WhatsApp for Android Coming With New Update Let You Recall, Edit Messages After Sending Them

WhatsApp for Android Could Soon Let You Recall, Edit Messages After Sending Them

WhatsApp was rumored to be trying a new feature on its iPhone beta version that permitted users to cancel or edit messages we have already sent to other contacts. It seems the feature is being tested on the Android beta app as well - though regular users cannot access it right now.

For the past some days, you have been listening to several tattles regarding the new features of WhatsApp. Be it Screenshot the message, GIF search, Offline messaging, Edit sent messages, etc. Now it's time to add two more to the list.

First is 'Recalling the chat', which means, even after we send a message on WhatsApp, if the receiver hasn't read the message yet, we will have an option of recalling it i.e., we can take your chats back.

And the second one which is rumored to be under testing is Editing sent messages i.e., we can edit our sent messages unless the receiver doesn't read it. The upcoming WhatsApp feature to edit or revoke sent message will work by long pressing a sent message. Though, this WhatsApp feature to revoke and edit sent messages will probably work only in the situation if the receiver hasn't seen the message from the sender. Now, WhatsApp allows users delete messages on the device level and the deleted messages remain visible to the receiver. Though the feature is already rumored to have hit the iOS devices, it isn't officially available as yet.

Unfortunately, there is no word when the new revoke or edit sent messages features will be offered for Android users.

The edit sent the message and revoke/ recall message features have reportedly shown up in beta versions of WhatsApp for Android - though they are restricted by default, meaning that we will have to turn it on manually on a rooted phone.

As per WABetaInfo, which tracks the beta releases of the app, the upcoming WhatsApp's edit and revoke features will be available in versions 2.17.25 and 2.17.26 respectively. But once the amazing features hit the mobiles, it would really help us in taking care of the imprecisely sent messages.

WhatsApp is also testing a feature to permit users to show the contents of archived ZIP and RAR files. Not many details have been made public otherwise, but we should be able to view the contents of the files being shared with us.

Recently The Company declared video calls on all its platforms, GIF support and video preview feature. It is also working towards a Snapchat-like status feature, which will be an individual feature and will allow us to set daily status for our friends.

All these features have been announced because of the rising competition, especially from  Google Duo and Google Allo. These two from Google have some interesting feature and an inbuilt assistant that no other service can boast of.

WWE Social Media Accounts Hacked Before Royal Rumble

WWE Social Media Accounts Hacked For Royal Rumble Match

Hacker Group OurMine tweeted from verified twitter accounts of World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). As we known  they hacked many twitter accounts.

Hacker group took control of @WWENXT twitter account and posted,

Hey, it's OurMine we are jus testing your security, please contact us for more information, Thanks.

According to Mashable, the compromised accounts, which included WWE Universe, WWE NXT, WrestleMania, WWE Network,  Summer Slam, and John Cena, were all linked to the profile of WWE’s head of social media, which is what allowed OurMine to break into all of them at once. Perhaps the most notable revelation from this is the fact that John Cena’s personal social media accounts are apparently controlled in some fashion by WWE, possibly as a safeguard against rogue tweeting or, ironically, hacking, as are all of the accounts of WWE superstars,

According to a statement from the Hackers group.

We just hacked it using the head of WWE social media account. It is linked to all of WWE Superstars accounts — Twitter and Facebook.

In a statement, WWE confirmed the hacks.

"WWE can confirm that several official WWE Twitter accounts were hacked for a brief period on Saturday evening," a spokesperson said. "WWE subsequently re-secured the accounts.
